Casa Sevilla is at 428 Chapala Street below Haley. This was a tenant improvement I worked on, a lot of work, finish carpentry, framing and forming for concrete. There was a lot of repair, I even grouted some plate steel in the new walk through openings cut into masonry walls. The project was fun.</div>

This restaurant doesn't exist now. They had a 5 year lease and it took two years to do the tenant improvement. The construction itself took 8 months. It was high end of course. They recruited a chef from Chicago and they had him on the payroll for a year before he served his first meal.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I can't find a picture of the exterior. It is an old stone house built in 1867, if I recall right, by Italian stone masons, the stone is coldwater sandstone from a local quarry. It became a restaurant not too long afterward. It was supposed to be the oldest continuous operating eating place in Santa Barbara. It closed down in the late 90's or early 2000's. It was bought by the people who owned the Holiday Inn around the corner on Haley. The parking lot of Sevilla was in back of the Holiday Inn. They wanted to tear down Sevilla after the lease was up, the problem was it is a historical landmark. It's still there today as far as I know. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It has a coed restroom! The stall partitions are from floor to ceiling. It has a lot of trick features, lots of expensive craft work. I am sorry it is not in business anymore. We went there once and the food was good, it was not memorable but I remember it was good.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I was working for Young Construction of Santa Barbara, the general contractor on the job. I appreciated the work but the company was not easy to work for. I did not get much appreciation. They did give me a lot of interesting work. So in balance it was a good job.</div>

<br />
An interesting and accurate take on narcissists like Trump and how to defeat them, by John Hedke<br />
"People have been saying that, when dealing with Trump (and the<span class="text_exposed_hide">...</span><span class="text_exposed_show"> GOP), we have to maintain our civility, our dignity, our sense of discourse. And it occurs to me that there's something they don't know about the situation that's key.</span><br />
<div class="text_exposed_show">
Trump is a narcissist. (Is there anyone other than a Trump supporter that doesn't know this by now?) But what a lot of these let's-stay-civil types don't know is how narcissists work. (Chances are they've never had to deal with one up close and personal before.)<br />
Narcissists don't see anyone else as real. We're not important. What's important to them is winning. There is no honor, no civility, nothing; it's all about them. This is why there's all the lying that we've already seen, much of which takes the "who are you going to believe, me or your lying eyes" form of gaslighting. ("No, I didn't make fun of a disabled reporter," for example.) And when caught in one lie, they'll lie again, frequently within seconds of the first lie. I've experienced this personally and you can watch the orange shitgibbon do the same thing.<br />
The problem is that the let's-be-civil types are working on the idea that "Well, Trump is a human being, there's some place where we can work with him, some deal we can make, some contract of behavior/interaction that we can spell out minutely enough that will nail him down to something we can depend on," and the short answer is "No." You simply cannot do this. (Want proof? How many times has he fucked over contractors/business partners? Look at the list of 5000+ lawsuits against him that the NY Times compiled shortly before the election. Wouldn't you think that's a record for someone so... successful?) You need to go back to the basic concept: we don't exist except as a backdrop to the narcissist's beliefs that it's All About Them.<br />
<br /></div>
</div>
Keep this in mind: There isn't anything you can do to deal with a narcissist.<br />
Nothing.<br />
Zero.<br />
Zip.<br />
You can offer them the moon and they'll take it, but you can't depend on them to do what they agreed to, even for the moon. In fact, many of them will make a POINT of screwing you on the deal if only to prove that they can and you're not as important as them. Therefore, any attempt to deal with them is automatically doomed to failure.<br />
Even worse, narcissists count on you being civil, being nice, not being ready for them. They're lying in wait for you and they will immediately start the games as soon as you show up.<br />
So, what does work when dealing with narcissists?<br /> Ignoring them when possible. (We can't in this case, alas.)<br />
Scorn.<br />
Mockery.<br />
Public humiliation on as big a scale as can be managed.<br />
You cannot "reach" a narcissist--they are completely unfixable--and anything based on the idea of "Oh, but they're human, there's some good in them, we should be nice because WE are people and should be nicer than them" is going to get you fucked over. And fucked over again. And again. Until you damn well sane up and get to the idea that there is Only One Thing that will stop a narcissist, you're going to have "Victim" on your forehead. And the narcissist will always take advantage of that.<br />
One of the helpful things is that narcissists really don't have a lot of game. Oh, they're clever enough at the gaslighting they do, but they're not really inventive nor, usually, terribly bright, either. They'll copy and steal whatever gag works, but they aren't original. Honestly, they rarely need to be. All those hotel deals gone bad are always the same, have you noticed? There's nothing new about them except the latest crop of victims. Other than that, they're the same old tired gag each time. Watch them and make mental notes. The first narcissist I knew tipped his hand by telling me the same story from his past in four slightly different versions over the course of maybe a year. Each time it was supposedly an exact recollection. And I started watching very, very closely at that point. <br />
I've known two narcissists in my life of Trump's caliber. One's dead--yay!--and one's still alive. I've seen all the behaviors that Trump is exhibiting up close and personal and I know exactly what needs to be done with narcissists. I no longer waste time in thinking that there may be some way to reach them, some way to deal with them, some way to accept them as a person, because they're unreachable, untrustworthy, and not really "people." And the sooner you all get to this level of understanding and stop being "nice" and start mocking and scorning the orange shitgibbon at every possible turn, the better off you'll be, too.<br />
You may say "But we'll be no better than he is, then!" Actually, yes, you will, always. You're automatically better because you care about other people. What you're doing is isolating a major disease vector and squeezing it out of existence in the only way possible. It's impervious to anything else. It's okay to be unhappy that you have to do this, but you're simply not allowed to kill people like this, so mockery, scorn, and laughing and pointing are the tools you have. Use them.<br />
------<br /> Note: This is now public. Anyone may copy and paste this. Sharing is fine, but if I get a ton of complaints from brownshirts that get FB to take this down, when the original goes, the shares go, so copying & pasting is preferable."<b></b><i></i><u></u><strike></strike>nofironhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17905225864120665821noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7139629765775762090.post-3019850048650401612014-07-08T23:00:00.000-07:002014-07-08T23:00:53.483-07:00<a href="http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/-/331254398155?roken=cUgayNHN">http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/-/331254398155?roken=cUgayN</a><br />

It was set in the Hughes Market shopping center on Balboa and Devonshire in what's called North Hills, not sure what it was called back then. It's between Northridge and Granada Hills and whatever they called East of Balboa and South of Devonshire.<br />
Three of us were walking up the back parking lot parallel to Balboa. We were going to a church service- revival that a friend of ours was throwing. The friend was a combination of Lonnie Spector and Fred Khoury. <br />
My companions were Dennis Wilkinson and a kind of Gary Mathern, I think. As we were walking to this event there was a line of half dressed young women and girls going into the Savon drugstore. I was told that they were auditioning for a Playboy photo shoot. They were in different states of undress and were wearing skirts or pants and no top. They got younger towards the back of the line. There seemed to be a lot of turquoise and light yellow on their clothing.<br />
We were headed to a hall or auditorium near the men's store on the East leg of the shopping center. We entered through the back through a door next to the stage. We went right over to greet Fred- Lonnie who was sitting- standing along the East wall. His hair was short and had bangs in front and he was wearing a jump suit. I said; "Do you remember me? I'm Ron Wilkinson." He gave me a hug for a greeting. <br />
The service- or entertainment on a stage that was too high to see. I went to the back of the hall to see the action on stage. It was a bunch of women dancing in colorful costumes that looked like what a Hindu Deity would wear. <br />
The auditorium had sloped seating going down towards the stage. There were chairs along the walls interrupted by wood boxes. The seating was in two sections, an upper and lower section with an aisle between. <br />
As I moved across the hall there was a small platform sitting on the center aisle right on an angle- 20 or 30 degrees facing the back. There was some miniature furniture on it and a little podium. From the back of the platform a homunculus male kid walked to the podium, he could see over the top. He gave his sermon anyhow. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii5fuNYlUJJ6p2lNoaBXKYw8c8o1c_DYmOPODRB9PEDOzITr2LsqKh6t_ptQq8XulD4phIxjwtKdaywB8ci14xvcM1yH8xF0Bcewr4DJ3cAUyFmueBHRO8Qo2gypN20vWfQP9GxHnIquE/s1600/hair-dresser-dogs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="228" qaa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii5fuNYlUJJ6p2lNoaBXKYw8c8o1c_DYmOPODRB9PEDOzITr2LsqKh6t_ptQq8XulD4phIxjwtKdaywB8ci14xvcM1yH8xF0Bcewr4DJ3cAUyFmueBHRO8Qo2gypN20vWfQP9GxHnIquE/s320/hair-dresser-dogs.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Then I was attracted to a girl singing on a pedestal to my left in the same aisle. She was very attractive and singing country gospel. So I went to check her out and caught her eye. I was trying to cover and ignore her as she checked me out. She started to morph into a chunky looking round faced hillbilly girl with curly red hair that was shaved up her neck and an inch above her ears. <br />
Then the "Hindu" costumed dancers were coming down from the stage and into the audience and people were filing out the door we came in. I had lost track of Dennis and Gary and I panicked because I thought they would leave me. <br />
I had not told Rene (my wife) that I was going to this thing and it was 10 pm at night. She was going to be pissed.<br />

Tear down?</div>nofironhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17905225864120665821noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7139629765775762090.post-18778775799361813312011-01-19T19:44:00.000-08:002011-01-19T19:44:24.194-08:00The 1924 Los Angeles Black Plague!The forces were mobilized! Crews wandered around spraying different disinfectants, killing rats with bates and traps. Even hiring guys with guns and terriers flushing and shooting California ground squirrels! Crews were tearing down stables, hog farms, granaries, houses, businesses! They tore down a lot of the poorer parts of LA, like the "negro shacks"! <br />
There were neighborhoods where the back yards were full of stored junk, lumber, trash; all rat breeding grounds. <br />
<br />
It was a full on disaster. People were dieing of pneumonic and bubonic plague. <br />
Scientists were locating "foci's" of plague. Norwegian and black rats plus the CA ground squirrels were the vectors.They found rat holes under restaurants, groceries, shoe and leather businesses. <br />
This whole episode was photographed and documented. The photos are archived at UC Berkeley. It's a total treasure of Los Angeles street scenes in 1924!<br />
My Father was 2 years old living in Echo Park. His older brother Harry had died in the 1918 flu epidemic. My Grandmother had a nervous breakdown. Her doctor, a Doctor Pahl, told her to have another child.He felt if she lost my uncle Bill, born 1917, she would go off the deep end. <br />
They named my father Donald Pahl. <br />
This piece of history is stunning to me. What if my Father or Uncle were taken away by this Plague? What if my Grandfather or Grandmother came down with it? <br />
Live was tenuous then. Penicillin was not discovered till 1928!! <br />
My Father was asthmatic, the doctor prescribed porter beer (prohibition time here) and they burned some incense crap when he had attacks. Pneumonic plague would of killed him.<br />

Last time I was in touch with him I found him at the Rainbow Room next to the Whiskey a Go Go on Sunset. He invited us (I think my wife to be, Danny Noonan, and Cheryl were with me) up to his place in the Hollywood Hills and I supposed we reminisced a little, and that was that. </div><div align="center" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">A few years before that I carried some equipment for his band for two gigs in my Datsun pickup. One was at the Beach House Bar at the foot of Lick(?) Pier, where the famous Avalon Ballroom (Lawrence Welk's joint) was. I parked close to the doors of the Ballroom on the pier itself.</div><div align="center" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Fred's band was playing the first set before Black Oak Arkansas. This was before BOA was a band of renowned. It was a fun gig for me, I was under age and they served me pitchers of beer and I danced to the music. Shortly after BOA came on we smelled smoke and then someone shouted FIRE from the stairwell. I ran outside to get my pickup and the flames were coming from underneath the pier next to my pick up. When I pulled up equipment was flying down the stairs. We packed up the pickup and went across the street and watched the pier burn. That's how I remember it 40 years back. </div><div align="center" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">They played at the Whiskey one night and I remember trying to nail the bass drum down to the stage because the drummer was kicking it away from him. We invited some "groupies" to the band apartment after the gig, it wasn't really exciting or gratifying, as least for me.</div><div align="center" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">That was that, I didn't see Fred or stay in touch aside from the Rainbow run in.</div><div align="center" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">So now I find friends on Faceplant along with Danny Chapman, the singer- harmonica player of the Vanilla Rain, the band that Fred , Dennis, Larry, Dave and Danny were in that they started in Jr High. VR was a very good band for a High School Garage Band and I was a fan boy and then a friend. We had a good time and had the usual teener adventures living in the SFV.</div><div align="center" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I hung out with most of them as individuals and I was close to Fred for a short time and we talked about ourselves and the state of our existence like young guys do at that age. We were pretty full of ourselves.I had other close friends from the band but I'm talking about Freddy here.</div><div align="center" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Danny sent me a video and a "7inch" CD with five compositions recorded by Fred back in the 70s. I was almost afraid to listen out of being disappointed or something. It turned out a lot better than I expected. I was surprised by his vocals, I had never really heard him sing. He wasn't really singing up front when I knew him, he played guitar, lead guitar- his voice was his guitar. I remember his father telling him BB King was great but BB needed to get rid of his guitar. </div><div align="center" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">So this CD features his songs sung by him and his voice is good!! He plays some "refrains," breaks on his guitar but it's part of the piece. He does not go off like a "Guitar God." The songs are complete compositions and the vocals and lyric are up front. The lyrics are personal and poetic. Sounds corny but I hear some of the Fred I remember when we had discussions and debates though that might be more than it really was. We were blowing off our anger and frustrations as kids growing into men. So the songs are sorting out experiences he had which is what most songs- poetry is about. These songs are of a further evolved Fred sometime after we hung out.</div><div align="center" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The music is influenced by the Beatles, maybe Bowie, Freddy Mercury, there's a cabaret sounding tune as a last cut. My favorite after the initial listening is the first one; "Open Up." </div><div align="center" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Fred is a definite Tenor, and has decent range. I'm not really a musician so take all this with a grain of salt. Danny said something about it and he, Fred, just let it go for some time. I've done the same thing with painting and making art. This is the Pan's Labyrinth sound track video, I tried Saturnalia (search) but all I got is lame explanatory videos and bad music-dance. This film though not about the Winter Solstice is closer to the spirit of it than anything else I have found. I do feel something elemental and ancient in this event (stating the obvious).<br />
My take on the Winter Solstice is that it is the shortest day of the year, the turning point and after the days grow longer. That's the biggest joy for me, the days get longer. In fact the Summer Solstice is the disappointing turn for me, days get shorter after that and I look forward to the Winter Solstice from that point.<br />

I wish I brought my camera!<br />
We lined up our bikes at Kurt's booth and there was an old knucklehead chop in front of my bike. It had a lavender paint job with shadow flames on the tank, the frame was the same color. It had a foot shift-hand clutch. Usually a bike like this would have a mouse trap but this bike had a cable that went to the seat post down tube and through to a cam and gear clutch arm. It was pretty trick and I've never seen one.<br />
The owner showed up and we said we liked his bike and I mentioned the clutch actuator and he said he made it from parts out of a ford transmission and I took a lot of weed and time to figure it out.<br />
He is from the SFV where I'm from, I can't remember from what part but he knew about some people I mentioned. I told him the Satan Slaves stole a friend of mine's bike and he said he used to be a Satan Slave but he didn't steal motorcycles.<br />
He built the bike back in 1965 and he rode it to the show at about 6am Sunday morning from the SFV. Which is not too long a ride but it's pretty cool that he rode to the shownofironhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17905225864120665821noreply@blogger.com0Ojai, Ojai34.448048 -119.24289tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7139629765775762090.post-65087211685968804952010-12-05T23:07:00.000-08:002010-12-05T23:07:05.330-08:00Dick LanePro Wrestling, Roller Derby and Demolition Derby announcer on KTLA in the 50s & 60s.
